That is why leather fragrances vary more wildly than almost any other category. Two bottles both labelled leather can smell like a tannery and a suede glove respectively, and both are correct.

Where leather in perfumery came from

The category exists because of a practical problem. Tanning leather in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries left a smell nobody wanted on a glove, and Grasse — then a tanning town — solved it by scenting the finished product. The perfume industry that grew out of that is the same one that exists today.

The compositions that defined the category:

• Chanel Cuir de Russie (1924) — birch tar and florals over a smooth iris base. The reference for elegant leather, and still the benchmark a century later.
• Caron Tabac Blond (1919) — leather with tobacco and carnation, created for women at a time when women smoking in public was itself a statement.
• Knize Ten (1924) — the dry, austere masculine leather. Almost unchanged in structure since release.
• Robert Piguet Bandit (1944) — the most aggressive of the classics. Bitter green leather, and unmistakably not built to please.

The point of the history is that leather has never been a gendered category in perfumery — three of those four were composed for women. The masculine association is a marketing development from the second half of the twentieth century, not a property of the material.

Testing leather properly

This category punishes casual sampling more than any other, for a specific reason: the opening of a leather fragrance is frequently unrepresentative and occasionally unpleasant.

• Give it forty-five minutes on skin. Birch tar and isobutyl quinoline are harsh in the first minutes and settle into something far smoother. Paper strips exaggerate the harsh part and lose the smooth part.
• Test one at a time. Leather accords are dense and dominate anything sampled next to them.
• Test in cold weather if you can. A leather fragrance in a warm room behaves nothing like the same fragrance in October air.
• Wear it around other people once. Leather is one of the categories where the gap between how it smells to you and how it reads across a table is widest.
